Davo
I'm writing this very late at night, on my laptop, in the back of Winter's car
A very drunk Yunie is half passed out on my shoulder. Cadence in the passenger seat is very amused. Winter has no visible feelings on the subject (which tends to be Winter's usual state).
In my summary of Yunie, I said that kye is probably the most sober of our core group. While kye tends to indulge assorted substances far less than the rest of us, kye does periodically partake, sometimes even in excess. This was one of those nights. For you see, today was Yunie's birthday.
Every year for kyr birthday, Yunie invites all of us to a party at Lake Sakakawea. Everyone gets extremely drunk and beligerent and start a huge bonfire. The usual birthday party things.
Even Winter and Cadence come out. Winter and Cadence are, I think, not much older than me, if older than me at all. Still, they definitely have Old Married Couple energy, and tend to not come to parties, gatherings, or general hangouts at the Unnamed Studio or really anywhere else. They make a few noteworthy exceptions, and one of them is Yunie's birthday.
Yunie invites everyone who hangs out in our general circle to kyr party. Hunter and Misha were both there, and did a good job setting aside their squabbles for the night. Misha even managed to avoid any sort of dramatic confrontation with Tara, who was also there. Yunie invites everyone to these things, and expects Misha to respect that.
Tara was cordial with me, even though I still haven't called her. She came to talk to me at one point when I snuck away from the crowd to stare at the lake and recharge. She didn't say much, she usually doesn't. Some idle smalltalk, and we shared a cigarette.
At one point she very politely offered to grab drinks, which I humbly accepted. She walked off and came back shortly later with a pair of White Russians... they smelled distinctly of nutmeg. Yunie really did invite everyone to these things.
Even on a normal day, Yunie is surprisingly affectionate (and potentially even handsy) despite kyr asexuality. After three or four drinks, kye becomes magnetic, it's hard to find kyr not attached to someone. Even Winter got a big Yunie hug at one point, which she seemed to be mostly okay with.
"This is cozier than I expected" Tara said, handing me our shared cigarette. We were sitting a ways from the fire, watching from a small distance. "When Yunie's involved I expect more of a wildfire than a bonfire."
I whiffed. "Yeah, kye's really been on kyr best behavior this year."
As though kyr ear was burning, Yunie locked eyes with me from the other side of the fire circle and began to saunter over. Kye was surprisingly graceful when drunk, one would be forgiven for thinking that kye was sober but just very flamboyant.
"You two look real good together." Kye said with a grin.
"Oh, uh" I said. "It's not like that."
Kye frowned, disappointed. Kye patted me on the head and ruffled my hair. "Well I'm glad you came out. Both of you."
"I wouldn't miss it." I said with a smile. Tara remained quiet.
Yunie looked at me, then looked at Tara, then turned to gaze dramatically at the lake, before turning back to us. "I have to ask..." kyr expression was a little more somber than usual, less of the passive, energetic joy in kyr eyes. "What are you so afraid of?"
I was caught off guard, and didn't have an answer right away. I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came out. Fortunately, my inability to respond didn't matter, as I noticed that Yunie wasn't looking at me. Kye was looking at Tara.
Tara didn't seem to have a better answer than I did. Or at least, not one she was wanting to share at that moment. She averted her eyes awkwardly, and Yunie took the hint. Kye sat down next to her for a moment and pulled her in for a big hug, which Tara seemed receptive to. "There there, take your time okay?" kye said, and Tara nodded. "And... well, be careful with Davo, okay?" kye continued, gesturing toward me. "She's fragile."
Tara giggled as Yunie stood and headed back toward the group. "Davo?" Tara asked, turning to me.
"Oh, that's just Yunie's little nickname for me. Dani Vogel, Da Vo."
Tara smiled. "That's cute. I think I'll call you that too." I laughed, quietly grateful that Tara didn't linger too much on the potentially embarrasing questions from Yunie. We finished our shared cigarette, and Tara excused herself to go talk to Azura for a bit... I still wasn't quite sure why Azura was here. I know Yunie invited everyone to these things, but that doesn't mean everyone has to show up...
Winter generously offered to give us a ride home, since she was completely sober. If Winter ever drinks, it must be in absolute private or just with her wife, since I've never once seen her even a tiny bit tipsy. Cadence, on the other, was more than a tiny bit tipsy. She hasn't had much to add, mostly just periodic giggling.
I had started to ask Yunie about the "fragile" comment during the ride, but I noticed kyr snoring softly on my shoulder. I guess this would be the second time this month one of us has passed out drunk with the other.
Winter was quiet throughout the drive home, as usual. With Yunie sleeping, Cadence lost in giggles and Winter wholly disinterested in conversation, this seemed like an opportune moment to write out this blog post while the thoughts are fresh in my mind (even though I'm sure I'll have to clean it up a bit when I sober up tomorrow).
